Statins: Kill or Cure?

Statins: Kill or Cure?

Some people, including medical people, are claiming that statins, far from being a wonder drug, are actually potentially very damaging to your health.

If you’re already taking statins, or are being advised to do so, how can you determine for yourself whether it’s safe to take them?

That’s the pressing question that faces anyone who is concerned with their health and well-being and who would like to make informed decisions – popping pills without understanding the benefits, risks and dangers would be like walking into an unknown area late at night: it may be perfectly safe, or it could be lethal.

Good research will help you work out which it is.

So, the basic argument goes like this: the anti-statins people say that the research does not show compelling evidence for the use of statins, unless you have calcification in your arteries. They go on to say that the many known side effects of statins far outweigh any slight advantage you might have. They also argue that changes to your diet and exercise are better ways to control cholesterol, where necessary, rather than medication.

In fairness, the known side-effects of statin use are many and acknowledged to be potentially very damaging. The question then arises just how much risk each of us is willing to take for the likely benefit of statin use.

The pro-statins people say that regular use of statins will give more benefit to far more people than will suffer, so there’s a net positive effect. It’s true to say that many people have no ill-effects when using statins, but of course that’s not the same as saying that you won’t have any side effects if you use them.

If your doctor suggests the use of statins, ask him some hard questions.

Make him justify their use to you. After all, you’re the one who’s going to take the risk, not him. If he’s well versed in the research behind statins he may well give you excellent advice for you. If he’s the type of doctor who just wants to push a pill onto you as fast as he can, to get you out of the waiting room, you might want to keep asking him pertinent questions until you get the information you need to make you feel comfortable with your decision.

Then again, you may just want to try some of the natural cholesterol reducing techniques available, to see whether you can avoid the need for medication completely.
